Basically, I ordered something from Amazon that had a guaranteed delivery date of Monday, but it didn’t arrive. I didn’t really expect to get a delivery on a holiday, and I’m in no rush to get my package anyway. The thing is, I received a delivery notification saying that the Postal Service had tried to deliver, but the mailbox was blocked and no one was available to receive the package. Which was total BS, because I was home all day and no one tried to deliver anything. My guess is that I was one of the last stops on the route and the courier figured they’d just say the package was undeliverable and knock off early. I don’t really care and I don’t think people should have to work holidays anyway, but it kind of irked me, since it made it out to be my fault, and because the package was recorded as undeliverable, I have to either reschedule a delivery time or pick up the package from the post office, which irritates me more.
Anyway, I sent an email to Amazon the whole thing, how I’ve been a Prime member for years, and how this sort of thing never used to happen before they partnered with the USPS (as an aside, I am a huge fan of the Postal Service, and I’m happy for them to have any partnerships that will bring in money). I got this response:
So, basically, in addition to a free month of Prime, Amazon’s systems will, all things being equal, prioritize shipping my packages through UPS, DHL, or FedEx over using USPS. I really doubt that this will make much difference in practice, but that was not a solution to my complaint that I was expecting. Good on you, Amazon.

Seems to be a consistent problem with the USPS — had the same thing happen to me a couple of times. The third time I happened to be watching out the window as the carrier came by (we were trying to see if my limited skills had managed to resolve a sprinkler issue). Carrier just drives by without stopping and I later get a notice that they tried to deliver and no one was home. I complained to the Post Office but didn’t think to raise it with Amazon — but I will the next time! Thanks.

Yeah, Amazon is definitely on the ball with their customer service.
I wish they’d do the same for me, though. I have complained about the USPS ad nauseum, to no avail. I have never gotten a package in two days when the USPS is involved. And it's ever more frequent with SurePost/SmartPost. I could see it if I lived in the middle of nowhere, but I don't. There are UPS and FedEx trucks in my development all day long.

I’ve noticed this when they switched to contracted rather than salaried postal carriers ten/fiftenish years ago. I used to know who my mailman was, now it’s a different person every week. And they keep losing my mail!

Similar thing happened to me last month - not only did I get another month of Prime, but they refunded the entire purchase price of the item ($31).
Great service. Being a cynic, my interpretation is that I spend WAY too much money with Amazon.

Wow. We’re very lucky - our USPS carrier will drive right up to our house with our packages and leave them by the door if we’re not home. We live in a quiet area and far back from the road where nothing’s going to go poof. She loves our dog (after they were properly introduced and the threat level was established to be zero) and is just a super nice person. Unfortunately, YMMV.

Amazon is pretty great overall. Way better than any big box retailer I’ve ever dealt with.
Also, I found that I don’t need to pay for two-day shipping. In most cases, since I live relatively close to the warehouse, I can get anything within that time even if I pay for the 4-8 day shipping. It’s awesome.

Costco is also awesome, btw. I had a “guaranteed by Christmas!” package arrive two days late, which I was perfectly ok with as the recipient was out of town, the package was a snack tower thing, and the wild animals where she lives would’ve eaten it if it sat there for 2 days.
I never said a word to Costco about it but they refunded the cost of the gift and then sent me a $50 gift card for my inconvenience.

I totally get what you’re saying about not being in a hurry to get the package, but pissed about being blamed for it. I’d feel the same way.
I like how Amazon worded their response. It’s almost like they’re saying “USPS is on our shit-list now.”

my letter carrier loves to cram boxes in the mail box. She doesn’t realize that just because it physically fits in the box, that doesn’t mean i can get it back out. I’ve had to cut boxes open while they’re still in the mailbox and remove the contents so i could get the box out.
On the other hand, both my UPS and FedEx drivers are awesome. Mostly because if the package it addressed to me, they leave it at the garage door (because it’s usually car parts), and if it’s for my wife it gets left at the entry door.

I had a similar issue with Lazership. They “attempted to deliver” a package three times. I or my girlfriend were home the whole day all three days with no one showing up. They declared my address undeliverable and shipped it back to Amazon. I called Amazon to complain and now Lazership isn’t allowed to ship to me.

In my area Amazon exclusively uses UPS.

USPS rocks!
Oh wait. They blow.
This is how they left my Amazon package.
Half in the box with the door wide open. Glad I was home and waiting for it so it didn’t stay out too long.
Also, if the weather sucks, the mail person just doesn’t show up.
